Conventional root form implants became a normal predictable treatment option to restore edentulous maxilla and mandible but restoring the lost alveolar dimensions such as narrow ridges, knife-edge ridges and severely atrophied ridges needs to be considered to have a predictable option for long term success and satisfactory results in the elderly patients. Therefore, basal implants are designed such that the anchorage is mainly gained from the basal cortical bones. Basal implants are used in many situations such as single tooth restoration with narrow labio-lingual bone dimension, multiple extractions of teeth, long edentulous spans, and when conventional 2-stage implant or bone augmentation procedures have failed. Also, indicated in thin ridges with reduced bone heights.
