O National Oceanic and Atmospheric Ad-ministration define microplasticos como particulas menores que 5 mm. Os plasticos sao de diferentes tipos, como microplasticos pequenos (0,33-1,00 mm), microplasticos grandes (1,01-4,75 mm), mesoplasticos (4,76-200 mm) e macroplasticos (> 200 mm) (Erikson, 2014).
