Na poludniu centralnego regionu Kuby znajduje sie jeden z glownych obszarow gorskich kraju: gory Guamuhaya, czesto nazywane El Escambray. Ten system orograficzny, o dlugosci 80 km, zorientowany ze wschodu na zachod, stanowi wazny osrodek ewolucji fauny i flory kubanskiej (Samek, 1973; Iturralde-Vinent, 1988). Fauna pajakow, ktora zamieszkuje Gory Guamuhaya, w poludniowo-srodkowym regionie wyspy Kuba, sklada sie z 239 gatunkow nalezacych do osmiu rzedow i 55 rodzin, z ktorych najbardziej zroznicowane sa Araneae (194 gatunki, 40 rodzin) i Opiliones (20 gatunkow, siedem rodzin). Do najbardziej interesujacych elementow nalezy 66 lokalnych endemizmow, z ktorych czesc ogranicza sie do jednej jaskini. Gaucelmus augustinus spider Keyserling, 1884 (Nesticidae) stanowi nowy rekord dla fauny Kuby. Po raz pierwszy odnotowano tu wiele gatunkow dla Guamuhaya.
