The UN Security Council is the main body responsible for maintaining international peace and security. For this purpose, it is endowed with a sufficiently broad mandate under the UN Charter. Unfortunately, however, the Cold War and inter-bloc confrontations have prevented the Council from fully exercising its functions. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, there was hope for a revival of the collective security system and a strengthening of the UN Security Council, and more frequent discussions of Council reform began. It seems unlikely that reform of that body will take place in the near future. That is why, along with its own option of expanding the membership of the Security Council, opportunities are also being considered to enhance the Council’s authority on the world stage by implementing and strictly observing the provisions of the UN Charter. This primarily concerns the revitalization of the Military and Security Committee and the creation of the UN’s own army , as well as issues of veto power, sanctions and some other issues. The book may be of interest to political scientists, international lawyers, students and postgraduates of these specialties.
