El territorio del Caucaso ha sido conquistado por el hombre desde la antiguedad, como lo demuestran numerosos monumentos culturales materiales del Paleolitico, como los sitios del tipo Ashelian y Muster (Ochamchire, Monte Yashtukh cerca de Sujum), asi como los sitios rupestres del Paleolitico Superior (Davis-Hvreli, Sakazhia, Mgvimevi etc.), Neolitico (Kistrik, Odigii) y Eneolitico (Beshtashen). En Georgia, por ejemplo, se descubrieron antiguas minas (Gebi), restos de fundicion y talleres de fundicion (Tsaghveri, Sokhumi, Svaneti, etc.). Uno de los asentamientos mas antiguos excavados por los arqueologos es el de Kul-Tepe, IV milenio a.C. Los habitantes de este asentamiento vivian en un solo lugar, construian casas de tierra, cultivaban la tierra y apacentaban el ganado. Los arqueologos han encontrado asentamientos similares en otras partes del Caucaso tambien.
