Here, you can find the first illustrated field guide to all woody plants known from the larger Amazon. It covers 109 families, 1,000 genera and an estimated 10,000 species. The work is divided over nine volumes, each treating the plant families in alphabetical order. It offers detailed descriptions of field characters, colour photos, drawings and aquarelle paintings of flowers, fruits, leaves, habit, habitat and distribution. It is the result of a lifetime research on plant-animal relations in pristine Amazonian rain forest. It is built upon three of my earlier works: 'Het Surinaams Vruchtenboek' from 1977, 'Fruits of the Guianan Flora' from 1985, and 'Wild Fruits from the Amazon'. End of 1986, I got contracted for life by the Brazilian Government to compile a fruit catalogue for the entire Amazon, featuring about five times as many species as the 1985 one. Ever since, I have worked on that magnum opus, along with other biodiversity and conservation projects in the Amazon. Now celebrating its completion, I would like to thank all botanists and field explorers, past and present, who collected and named the myriad of plants I examined for the compilation of this 'Flora Amazonica'.
