The basis for the plot of the play was the criminal case of Catherine and Nikolay Gimer spouses, which Tolstoy found in 1897. But even before that the writer had some ideas and images embodied in the drama The Living Corpse . In a diary entry dated February 9, 1894 we read: It is clear occurred to the story, which would put two people: one - dissolute, confused, fallen to only contempt from the kindness of others - seemingly pure, honorable, respected by coldness, not love.
