This special issue features teahouses by Sen no Rikyu and Kobori Enshu, considered classic masterpieces, as well as works in which a rich diversity of morphological expressions were developed between tradition and renewal. The issue also introduces architecture that uses teahouses as a design reference, such as the later sukiya and modern spacial expressions. Thirty-three works are presented here in this volume, 22 of which were newly photographed. The issue presents, in addition to floor plans, number of detailed interior elevations and sections to represent a variety of teahouses. Guest editor Kirisako Kunio's texts, focused on the idea of "relationship with nature," describes the appeal of teahouse in a concrete manner that is easy to understand for those new to teahouses culture.
