Cette tragedie est la plus problematique d'Eschyle: l'annee de representation est inconnue, meme si le style semble proche de l'Orestie, donc tardif, et que certains traits font penser a la Sicile ou Eschyle finit sa vie. L'attribution meme du Promethee enchaine est discutee. On suppose en tout cas que cette piece aurait ete la premiere d'une trilogie liee, suivie de deux autres Promethee: Promethee delivre et Promethee Porte-feu. Les hypotheses a ce sujet permettent egalement de rechercher une coherence et un sens qui semblent manquer si l'on considere la piece comme isolee…
