Ce roman est l'histoire de Claude des Huttes, tailleur de pierres a Saint-Point, un pauvre hameau du Maconnais. Saint-Point etait un lieu bien connu de Lamartine: son pere y acheta le chateau en 1802 et Lamartine en devint proprietaire en 1820. Il y est aujourd'hui enterre.
