Stunning selections from an influential New York printmaking studio exemplify a febrile period in which postmodern architects borrowed from the art of printmaking
Capturing the catalytic moment when architecture co-opted art practices through printmaking, Architectural Image-Making in 1980s New York documents the recent history of spatial representation, works on paper, fine-art printmaking and artistic production produced by and exhibited at John Nichols Printmakers & Publishers at 83 Grand Street in SoHo between 1978 and 1994. Included are detailed plates of selected works and an engaging ensemble of essays and new photography, alongside indexical chronologies and a glossary of printmaking terminology. The publication is informed by the three-part exhibition series of the same name presented at the original site of John Nichols' office, now known as A83, throughout 2023. It features works from artists such as Aldo Rossi, Robert Morris, Robert Rauschenberg and more. American critic Aaron Betsky says of A83, "By showing not only the beauty of such fragments and figments of architects' imagination ... A83 has provided an invaluable counterpoint to the mindless making of buildings that dominates far too much of the discipline."
