Samuel Oppenheim (1857-1929) war ein oesterreichischer Astronom, der sich besonders mit Himmelsmechanik beschaftigt hat. Er lehrte in Prag und Wien und war Mitherausgeber der Enzyklopadie der mathematischen Wissenschaften. In dem hier vorliegenden Werk verdeutlicht Oppenheim die Problemstellungen der Astronomie des beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Verlag der Wissenschaften verlegt historische Literatur bekannter und unbekannter wissenschaftlicher Autoren. Dem interessierten Leser werden so teilweise langst nicht mehr verlegte Werke wieder zugangig gemacht. Das vorliegende Buch ist ein Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1911.
