Each painting in this small monograph of work by Glasgow-based British artist Merlin James is an appeal to the viewer to play with the semantic elements of the picture. The second in the KW Pocket Series, Signal Box presents a snapshot of thirty years of Merlins work exhibited at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin as well as a number of other important works from the artists career including a group of distinctively shaped canvases, semitransparent framed supports, and paintings on canvas. Included also is a conversation with the artist by KW chief curator Ellen Blumenstein. Merlin Jamess paintings have been exhibited widely, including at the Kunstverein Freiburg, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; and Parasol Unit Foundation for the Arts in London besides representing Wales at the 52nd Venice Biennale. Alongside his painting practice, he is an accomplished art writer, critic and curator.
