Half of mankind lives in cities, a tendency that has been on the increase for centuries. City dwellers use the greater part of our energy and yet also produce the most pollutants, thus having far-reaching consequences for world climate. Climate change also has an impact on urban life, influencing living and working conditions in the city. The Internationale Bauausstellung (International Building Exhibition) IBA Hamburg focuses on this theme, taking a detailed look at The City in Climate Change . Volume 2 of the Metropolis series illuminates causes and examines previous efforts in architecture, town planning and urban development planning that reflect new strategies and visions for living and building with the effects of climate change in mind.
