The architect’s office gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, founded by Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg in 1965, has established an undisputed reputation in the architectural world during the last forty years. Today, the office realises successful projects in many national and international locations. Its oeuvre ranges from transport buildings, museums and theatres to office and shopping complexes. However, few people know that the architects have also planned and built more than 20 villas. These individual buildings combine tradition and the modern age using a language of forms and materials primarily related to the genius loci: whether the facade is wood, rendering or glass - each villa blends into the surrounding topography in a unique way. Many of them represent outstanding examples of individual house architecture. In this publication, a detailed documentation of selected exam-ples with photos and plans is supplemented by essays by the well-known author Gert Kahler. He investigates the history of living and living spaces, and - in conversation with the architects - examines their own personal relationship to living, well-being and materiality.
