The Lyrics in African American Popular Music: Proceedings of Metz (September 29th-30th, 2000) = Le Texte Dans la Musique Populaire Afro-Amaericaine: Actes du Colloque International de Metz (29-30 Septembre 2000)

The first international conference specifically devoted to the lyrics in African American popular music was held in Metz in September 2000 and gathered scholars and experts on blues, gospel song and rap. The eleven contributions, three of which in French, contained in this volume turn their attention to structure and thematic and expressive content in the three genres. Their conclusions, more than ever, allow us to see black popular music as the ongoing oral history of African Americans. Tenu a Metz en septembre 2000, le premier colloque international consacre specifiquement au texte dans la musique populaire afro-americaine a reuni chercheurs universitaires et experts autour du blues, du gospel et du rap. Les onze communications, dont huit en anglais, qui constituent cet ouvrage se penchent plus particulierement sur la structure et le contenu thematique et expressif de ces trois genres musicaux. Leurs conclusions amenent plus que jamais le lecteur a percevoir la musique populaire afro-americaine comme l'histoire orale du peuple noir aux Etats-Unis.
