The story of the birth of the Renaissance in the city of Florence is well known.

But the economic structures that created the conditions for the Renaissance also brought about the colonization of non-European worlds through linguistic and semiotic hegemony–a part of the story rarely incorporated into traditional narratives of Renaissance Florence.
