The central Anatolian town of Aizanoi in Phrygia played a key roll in our understanding of the early Byzantine period. A survey of the residential development in the city and the surrounding areas shows that there was a boom in construction in the town in the later fourth centruy and a move to a more rural way of life in the fifth and sixth centuries. Some 500 newly discovered pieces of decorative stonework provide eveidence of local workshops and also the production of the central Anatolian marble quarries at Dokimion.
