The Vienna Model 2

Vienna is considered worldwide as the ‘secret capital’ of social housing. Since the 1920s, the Austrian capital has indeed developed a unique system of subsidised housing construction independently of the ‘free’ market, where more than 60% of its population lives in today. The Vienna Model 2, which is the book accompanying the exhibition by the same name that has been successful since 2013, analyses the latest developments in housing and shows the best Viennese examples in recent decades. It shows how technical, ecological and social qualities are continuously developed further as part of a wide participatory process and can thereby set new standards. The IBA Vienna 2022 presented for the first time in this book will also be dedicated to the topic of ‘new social housing’. Alongside this, renowned experts present the current housing construction situation in North America, Asia and the EU.
