Facades

The facade is the representative side of a building, lending it its character. The most expressive sides of buildings, however, are not always those originally planned as facades. The collection in this book of building portraits comprises unspectacular walls, hidden or supposed lee sides, and temporary modifications to houses, which boast a lot of charm or even sculptural qualities and could not have been better designed. Viewing these ‘other walls’ as facades is all the more fascinating when one considers the facade of a house to be its face.
