The author focuses both on Endlicher’s biography and his different scientific studies and the meaning of his works in the areas of botany and sinology. He played an important role in the foundation of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna in 1847. The author also deals with his role in the Revolution of 1848 and the different rumours surrounding his death. The core of the book is the text critical edition of the complete correspondence with scholars and artists of his time, kept in the Natural History Museum Vienna, including more than 460 letters from 93 people. The volume gives an insight in the cultural-historical and political situation surrounding Endlicher in the first half of the 19th century.
