Der Erzahler, ein Studienrat und Schriftsteller, und seine Frau Lissy, eine AErztin, leben in Dusseldorf. Im Theater begegnen sie einer Jugendliebe des Erzahlers und deren Freund. Die beiden sind Linguistikprofessoren. Im Laufe der Erzahlung entwickelt sich eine gegenseitige Anziehungskraft, die so stark wird, dass sich die beiden Paare uberkreuz verbandeln.
