Karl August Varnhagen Von Ense - Friedrich de la Motte Fouque: Briefwechsel 1806-1834

English summary: The previously unpublished correspondence between Karl August Varnhagen von Ense and Friedrich de la Motte Fouque began in 1806 and continued, with interruptions of varying lengths, until 1834. This correspondence testifies to a note-worthy friendship, shaped by several disruptions, which developed during a remarkable period of history. At its beginning, Fouque was already an established author, and therefore lent his support as a mentor to Varnhagen, who was only a few years younger. This is an interesting period of development from the point-of-view of an author, though its sources have not been published. Varnhagen’s letters to Fouque express his search for an authentic form of literature, although it eventually became clear to him that his calling lay in the development of a biographically oriented form of historical writing, which is how he has been represented in subsequent literary history. This development, however, changed his relationship to Fouque. The two friends became estranged and they moved in increasingly divergent ways, both politically and personally. The letters in this volume offer a panorama of literary connections, chiefly in the years between 1806-1814 in Berlin, Prague and Vienna.
