English summary: Johann Joachim Eschenburg (1743-1820) was one of the key intellectuals at the threshold of the Enlightenment, Classicism and Romanticism. As a professor at the ‘Collegium Carolinum’ he practiced in almost all fields of knowledge: philosophy and literature, music and the visual arts, as well as the theory of science and education. As a close confidant during Lessing’s last decade, he also had considerable influence on Lessing’s late works, but also on his concept of science and humanities. Of all of Eschenburg’s many activities, it is mostly his translation of Shakespeare that is known to a wider public. This interdisciplinary study aims to correct this rather one-sided view. Twenty-four essays illuminate all areas of research on which Eschenburg has left his mark, while also reconstructing the impressive intellectual networks from around 1800 that tend to elude conventional classification into epochs. This volume contains a greatly expanded and updated bibliography of Eschenburg’s writings and a complete research bibliography. Als Professor am ‘Collegium Carolinum’ hat er nahezu alle Felder des Wissens bearbeitet: Philosophie und Literatur, Musik und bildende Kunst, Wissenschaftstheorie und Bildungswissenschaft. Als enger Vertrauter in Lessings letztem Jahrzehnt hat er daruber hinaus dessen spate Werke, aber auch Lessings Wissenschaftsbild massgeblich beeinflusst. Von diesen vielfaltigen Aktivitaten Eschenburgs ist heute allenfalls seine Shakespeare-Ubersetzung einer breiteren Offentlichkeit prasent. Insgesamt 24 Aufsatze beleuchten alle Bereiche des Wissens, in denen Eschenburg Spuren hinterlassen hat; und sie rekonstruieren zugleich jene beeindruckenden intellektuellen Netzwerke um 1800, die sich herkommlichen Epochenzuschreibungen entziehen.
