Umweltschutz ist Teil der staatlichen Zukunftsvorsorge. Aus diesem Auftrag leitet sich die Forderung umwelttechnologischer Innovationen durch das Bundesministerium fur Bildung, Wissenschaft, Forschung und Technologie (BMBF) ab. Das Buch beschaftigt sich mit dem okologischen Nutzen und der wirtschafts- und technologiepolitischen Bedeutung dieser Innovationsforderung. Es werden Vorschlage fur die kunftige strategische und inhaltliche Ausrichtung der Forderung entwickelt. Neue Herausforderungen gehen insbesondere vom Leitbild einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung von Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft aus, das 1992 auf der Konferenz fur Umwelt und Entwicklung in Rio de Janeiro zu einem globalen Thema wurde.
