Jahrhunderts ruckten vor allem in der franzoesischen Aufklarung die Fragen nach Funktion und Arten der Zeichenverwendung, nach dem Sprachursprung und nach dem Verhaltnis zwischen Sprache und Denken ins Zentrum des Interesses. In diese Diskussion schaltete sich der franz. Philosoph und Naturwissenschaftler Maupertuis (1698-1759) mit zwei Schriften ein, die hier erstmals in dt. UEbersetzung vorgelegt werden.
