Angesichts der bekannten Problematik, dass Fichte die Wissenschaftslehre in mehr als zehn Fassungen vortrug, selbst jedoch allein die fruhe Darstellung der grundlegenden Prinzipien der Wissenschaftslehre von 1794 (PhB 246) zum Druck brachte, ist die hier erstmalig edierte Erlanger Fassung von Bedeutung. Im Unterschied zu der Berliner Fassung von 1804 (PhB 284), die bis dato als die hoechstentwickelte und damit verbindlichste Darstellung der Wissenschaftslehre gewertet wird, ist der Text von 1805 im Originalmanuskript von Fichtes Hand erhalten.
