The veiling of the human head is a striking phenomenon of Baroque sculpture, which is presented here in various facets of its history and meaning and with regard to its spread within Europe. The veiling of the face and figure is known in folklore and visual art as a sign of modesty and mourning, but the veil was also used symbolically in the visual language of baroque allegory. In addition to these substantive issues, the present study addresses in particular the virtuoso sculptural presentation of veils and veiling in the plasters of the 17th and 18th Centuries, as well as the artistic playing with of the imagination of the viewer. German text.
