Long a friend of Kepler, he entered into correspondence as a professor with the Strasburg historian Matthias Bernegger, with the Basel hebraicists Johannes Buxtorf father and son, with Pierre Gassendi, with the provencal nobleman, collector, and scholar, Peiresc, with Johann Valentin Andreae and with many others. Schickard’s correspondence, scattered over numerous libraries, is brought together here for the first time. It comprises 243 letters from and 253 letters to Schickard as well as exerpts from 228 letters dealing with Schickard. The letters are privided with short summaries and commentaries and are indexed by persons (where possible with biographical information for persons up to the 18th century), by institutions, by places, and by topics. the bibliographical listing comprises a bibliography not only of Schickard’s own works and of works dealing with him, but also of works cited in the letters as well as of research literature utilized by the editor. The letter collection here presented should be of high interest for research into the history of science and into the history of the universities at the time of the Thirty Years War.
