Le Corbusier. Die Kapelle von Ronchamp / La Cappella di Ronchamp
Daniele Pauly
The pilgrimage church, Notre-Dame Du-Haut in Ronchamp, is considered an icon of modern architecture, and represents one of the most important buildings of Le Corbusier’s late work. Situated on a high plateau in the Vosges above Belfort, this building is regarded as a unique work of art in its spatial design and form, fitting perfectly into its environment. The shell-shaped roof, the curving walls, the stone-masonry towers and the facade with its rhythm created by coloured glass openings are essential components of this sculptural construction. The scale and proportions of the Ronchamp Chapel are according to Le Corbusier’s Modulor which provides its special spatial effect. This text tells the history of the building’s construction and its effect, and contains hitherto unpublished plans and photographs.
