In den Jahren 1869 - 1870 veroeffentlichte Jules Verne unter dem franzoesischen Originaltitel Vingt mille lieues sous les mers, den Roman Zwanzigtausend Meilen unter dem Meer. Darin veroeffentlicht der franzoesische Professor Pierre Aronnax einen Erlebnisbericht uber die Geheimnisse der Meerestiefen. Eine Hauptperson des Romans ist der mysterioese Kapitan Nemo, der - seiner Zeit weit voraus - uber Unterseeboote zu berichten weiss, den aber offenbar ein tragisches Schicksal umgibt.
