1906 erbaute Siemens in Wiesmoor fur das strukturschwache Ostfriesland das Torfkraftwerk. Das fuhrte zu einem Aufbluhen der Region im doppelten Sinne. Heute bezeichnet sich die Stadt Wiesmoor deshalb auch als die Blute Ostfrieslands. 1964 wurde das Torfkraftwerk, der bis dahin groesste Arbeitgeber der Region, stillgelegt - und im gleichen Jahr 1964 begann die Produktion des VW-Kafers in Emden. Inzwischen ist Ostfriesland auch ein wesentlicher Faktor fur die Erzeugung von regenerativer Energie in Deutschland.
