Joseph Frey (1808 - 1872) war Fassmaler und Nebenerwerbslandwirt in Schmiechen. Sein Neffe Karl Frey (1836 - 1900) studierte an der Akademie in Munchen und spezialisierte sich auf Portratmalerei. Er schuf aber auch drei Kreuzwegserien. Hierbei orientierte er sich an der Nazarenermalerei. Er wohnte in Egling an der Paar. Neben der Malerei fuhrte er die koenigliche Postagentur in Egling und betrieb eine kleine Landwirtschaft.
