Goethe, der Pharmazeut Trommsdorff aus Erfurt und der Bergmeister Freiesleben aus dem Erzgebirge waren die bekanntesten Besucher von Ilsemanns Mineraliensammlung. Als Apotheker veroeffentliche Ilsemann chemische Untersuchungen, beschrieb ausfuhrlich ein Harzer Molybdanmineral, das nach ihm Ilsemannit benannt wird, und er war auch der erste Lehrende fur Chemie an der Vorlauferin der heutigen TU Clausthal. Sein Lebensweg und sein Wirken werden ausfuhrlich anhand zahlreicher Dokumente vorgestellt.
