Adelheid ist zehn Jahre alt, als sie in die Schule des Klosters Brunshausen kommt. Sie hat sich in den Kopf gesetzt, Buchmalerin zu werden, obwohl eine solche Ausbildung fur sie als Tochter des Mullers keineswegs passend ist. Wir sind schliesslich im 13. Jahrhundert! Still und eigensinnig verfolgt Adelheid ihr Ziel. In den Jahren ihrer Ausbildung im Kloster trifft sie immer wieder auf Geheimniskramerei der Nonnen, auf Fragen, die nicht beantwortet werden, aber schliesslich auch auf das ganz grosse und gefahrliche Geheimnis, das letztlich ihr Leben verandern wird.
