Tobias, Schauspieler und Theaterpadagoge, beschliesst die Via Rhenana zu bewandern. Dieser Weg fuhrt von Basel nach Kreuzlingen und ist in mehrere Tagesetappen unterteilt. Ein Etappenziel ist Rheinau, wo ein altes Kloster steht, das heute als Musikinsel bekannt ist. Tobias ist begeistert von der Anlage und lasst das Kloster und die Umgebung auf sich wirken. Als sich ein fremder, alterer Mann, der sich als Bruno vorstellt, zu ihm setzt, beginnen die beiden ein Gesprach, das in ihnen tiefe Spuren hinterlasst. Der philosophische Dialog zwischen Tobias und Bruno ist hier aufgezeichnet.
