The surface properties of wood have to be fully understood and tailored to the particular purpose. Proper surface characterization and treatment methods must be selected to obtain the most relevant surface properties. Some surface treatment processes are well established, such as the surface finishing of wood with coatings, and others are less known, and their potentials are underestimated. In this Special Issue, novel materials to improve the properties of wood are considered, such as thermochromic microcapsules or biocide-containing capsules, novel superhydrophobic and inorganic silicate-based coatings, etc. Novel wood treatment technologies, such as plasma treatment, are also included in this issue.
