This volume edits and annotates the pedagogical and political writings and speeches of Ernst Freiherr von Feuchtersleben (1806-1849). The texts are drawn from newspapers, magazines, unpublished manuscripts, a pamphlet and previously unknown archive materials, and are complemented by critically revised texts from the historical edition of Friedrich Hebbel. Feuchtersleben wrote these texts in the period from 1835 to 1849 during a period full of Vormarz reform hopes. Seen with the benefit of historical distance, the dashing of these hopes, as subjectively experienced, seems to have not been in vain. The annotations have drawn on the partly destroyed archive of unpublished texts. From a historical perspective, this collection of texts reveals another side of Feuchtersleben, a side previously unknown even to the interested and well-informed audience. Never was the poet and author of the Diatetik der Seele more forgotten than the image reconstructed here of a socially committed doctor, politician for education and constitutional monarchist.
