The Cypriot Bronze Age Pottery from Sir Leonard Woolley’s Excavations at Alalakh (Tell Atchana)
Celia J. Bergoffen
The aim of Woolley’s excavations at Tell Atchana was to trace the cultural interconnections between the Minoan civilisation and the Near East, and the site itself presented a midway point on one of the principle trade routes of the Mediterranean in the Amuq Valley. The volume and variety of the finds from Alalakh combined with the possibility of dating them on the basis of historical evidence made the site of the utmost importance. This study looks primarily at the Cypriot pottery from Tell Atchana, and attempts to recreate and discuss the controversial chronology that Woolley proposed in his preliminary excavation reports. Contains a catalogue of the surviving finds.
