The historical-philological book of names covers all Austrian place names (names of villages, mountains, districts and waters) referred to in the historical sources from the 8th to the 12th centuries. The entirety of Austrian and foreign sources have been covered. The arrangement of the individual place names is in alphabetical order according to their current official names. The inclusion of the historical secondary literature for dating and localisation, and the verification of the spelling using the originals ensures that the analysis that accompanies each name in brief form is linguistically accurate. Austria lies at the meeting point of three major linguistic families, the Germanic, the Romance and the Slav, a factor that has determined the name landscape of our region. Slav, Romance, German and Pre-German place names are eloquent testimony of a region that has been settled from prehistoric times by a variety of peoples, and thus constitute part of the historic heritage of the region. The present 16th volume deals with the names of Vorarlberg (A-Z). It also contains addenda to the previous volumes and a completely new, updated list of abbreviations and sources. An additional register provides a list of the appellativa, personal names and suffixes according to their linguistic origin.
