Master’s Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Pedagogy - Common Didactics, Educational Objectives, Methods, language: English, abstract: The topic of concern of the research is the critical thinking ability of the primary and high school students of Bangladesh and its effects on their tertiary level education. In the research, the critical thinking ability of these levels of students was found to be deficient to an extent. The research has found that the recently introduced creative method has proved to be more favorable for developing the critical thinking ability of the students than the previous methods, though the creative method is struggling for effective implementation for various reasons. For example, the lack of trained teachers, partial knowledge of the students about the creative method and accessibility to guidebooks are contributing to the unsuccessful application of the method. Moreover, the research found out that there is an urge on the part of students for modification of the creative method. Besides, fragmented knowledge on different topics in different classes or grades, lecture-based classes, the tendency of taking down lecture notes in H.S.C and university levels are also responsible for a lack of critical thinking abilities of the students. Furthermore, the tendency of memorizing essays and question- answers has not been lessened as memorized essays and notes carry good marks even in the new system of examination. Indeed, the research findings do agree with the fact that the lack of critical thinking ability among the students of Bangladesh is particularly due to the effects of our education policies, memorizing and passive learning on the part of students on a large scale.
