Die Vorarbeiten fur diese Studie gehen weit zuruck. In Vorlesungen und ubungen habe ich ihr Problem mehrfach behandelt. Auf dem von der Unga- rischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Budapest im Mai 1965 veranstal- teten Colloquium Les problemes du Gothique et de la Renaissance et l’ Art de l'Europe centrale und auf dem Internationalen Seminar des Kunst- historischen Instituts Florenz Probleme der Quattrocentomalerei in Flo- renz im September 1965 habe ich uber das Thema gesprochen. Zum Ab- schluss kam die Studie wahrend meiner Zugehoerigkeit zum Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, vom September 1965 bis Januar 1966.
