Sumatriptan succinate is effective in 70% of migraine attacks but has short duration of action and low oral bio-availability due to first pass metabolism. It has elimination half-life of 2.5 hours and has absorption zone from stomach and upper part of small intestinal tract. In present study floating alginate microbeads system has been designed for gastro retention. Sodium alginate (low methoxy grade), HPMC K15M and Pluronic F127 were selected for preparation of microbeads of Sumatriptan succinate. Sumatriptan succinate loaded microbeads were prepared using ionotrophic gelation method. The effect of various process variables as Stirring Speed, Needle size, Dropping distance, Medium for gelation, Gelation time as well as formulation variables were studied. Prepared microbeads were evaluated for micromeritic properties, percentage microbeads yield, percent floating capacity, percent drug entrapment efficiency and percent drug release. In the present book Optimization of process variable and formulation variable of microbeads were carried out. The book will be useful for the researchers working in the areas of formulation development of Pharmaceuticals.
