OEkonomisierung als Rationalisierung im Arbeits- und Produktionsbereich stellt ein kapitalistisches Grundprinzip dar, das seit den 1980er Jahren zunehmend auf ausseroekonomische Bereiche ubertragen wird. Vorangetrieben wird diese Entwicklung national sowie international vor allem durch Staat, Politik und transnationale Akteure, die zunehmend oekonomische Steuerungsmittel wie Evaluation und Indikatorensteuerung in den Bildungsbereich einfuhren. Primares Ziel ist es, Wettbewerb systematisch im Bildungssystem als Entwicklungsinstrument zu etablieren. Hierdurch sollen marktahnliche Strukturen - sogenannte Quasi-Markte - geschaffen werden, deren bildungsoekonomisches Ziel insgesamt eine nachhaltige Steigerung der gesamtgesellschaftlichen Produktivitat von Bildung ist.
