The change in the demography causes a strong war of talents: there are more ‘old employees’ leaving the job market than young professionals joining it. As the economic, political and social environment faces an increase of unstableness and dynamic, concerns need competent staff members. This thesis deals with managing and measuring competencies as well as with their options of being arranged and implemented in modern human resource management. Competencies are explained as people’s abilities to act self-organized in new and insecure situations. After all terms that are necessary to understand the thesis are explained, different possibilities to measure human competencies are introduced and evaluated critically. Dealing with the assessment center based approach the author describes how to develop an assessment center specific for a company’s needs. Finally a strong suggestion for the test based and the assessment center based approach of measuring competencies is given. Looking at the topic of competency management the results of the findings show, that competencies and there managements importance today just is in the middle field of a long list of HR-topics. Caused in the situation described in the beginning there will be a strong raise of its importance in the next years. As several studies of the last years also gave the forecast of and increasing weight of competency management, which did not came true that strong, it is questionable whether today’s forecast comes true. The last part of this thesis gives companies a guideline how the implementation of competency management should be
