This book presents the method of the integration of two teaching approaches: vocal and voice-speech. The book will be both illuminating and surprising for a wide audience: professional musicians and singers, lay people who are interested in music and arts, opera fans, singing teachers and students of singing and musicology. What is happening inside the pharynx of an opera diva when she is singing a high C? An MRI experiment described in this book is the first that makes it possible to literally see internal geometry and dynamics of the working vocal apparatus of an opera singer. Experienced vocal coaches, who know intuitively what should be done to improve quality of voice and increase its range and power will see directly which of the intrapharyngeal muscles should be trained (and to what extent) in order to reach the desired result. Widely-used expressions, such as open your throat or flatten your tongue are now visualized and supported with a quantitative analysis. Specialists in phonetics and phoniatrics, vocology and speech/singing acoustics will find the book novel, having both immediate and far-reaching implications.
