El 18 de abril de 1801, Stendhal anota en su diario: Me propongo escribir la historia de mi vida dia por dia . El comienzo de este diario personal ejemplifica la aparicion de un tipo de autor moderno: el diarista. El hombre que escribe su diario ya no lo hace solamente por una razon contable, sino que halla en el un instrumento para narrar su vida. Nace un nuevo genero: el diario literario. Esta investigacion establece un acercamiento teorico e historico-literario al diario personal para analizar su asentamiento en el sistema literario. Se parte de diarios autobiograficos como los de Pepys, Stendhal, Amiel, Gide, Leautaud, Ribeyro o Trapiello con el objetivo de estudiar el desarrollo de un nuevo personaje en la literatura occidental: el Yo que construye, a partir de si mismo, el relato de sus dias.
