Com o regresso da emigracao ao quotidiano portugues, tornou-se manifesto que o fenomeno adquiriu contornos diferentes em comparacao as vagas de emigrantes anteriores. Esta investigacao centrou-se nos portugueses residentes na Austria e procurou descrever o comportamento da lingua portuguesa em contacto com as diferentes linguas estrangeiras com as quais convive em contexto austriaco e as consequencias dai decorrentes. Por exemplo, em que medida ha interferencias de outras linguas, quais as estrategias dos falantes para gerir as suas competencias linguisticas, quais as areas mais permeaveis a transferencias, etc. Como se trata de uma comunidade recente e nao muito numerosa, os fenomenos linguisticos puderam ser observados ainda numa fase inicial.
