Der Autor verwendet Aufklarung statt als Epochenbegriff des 18. Jahrhunderts als menschlichen Subjektwerdungsprozess, nicht als Philosophie, sondern als praktisch-lebensweltliche Bewegung mit den Zielen Herrschaft der Vernunft, Toleranz, Rationalitat, Gleichheit, Freiheit und Burgerrechte. Er beschreibt Aufklarung nicht nur als Zeitverlauf, sondern als raumliche Erstreckung uber West- und Mitteleuropa hinaus auf Balkan, Apennin und Pyrenaen sowie auf Nord- und Sudamerika, also auf die okzidentalen bzw. semiokzidentalen Teile der Erdkugel. Aufklarung wird so zum globalisierenden Weltphanomen, dem Dill die Begriffe Menschheit und Menschenrechte zuordnet, womit aus nationalen bzw. historischen oder lokalen Identitaten eine universale, gesamtmenschheitliche Identitat erwachst.
