A ideia do presente volume nasceu durante o IX Congresso de Lusitanistas de Alemanha (Descobertas e utopias: a diversidade dos paises de lingua portuguesa) em Viena em setembro de 2011, na secao intitulada Poesia do terceiro espaco - lirica lusofona contemporanea. Os artigos reunidos neste volume refletem um termo crucial para os estudos pos-colonias, o eponimo terceiro espaco . Cunhado por Homi Bhabha e frequentemente usado em sentido abrangente, o termo serve como ponto de partida heuristico para analisar a ideia de espaco na poesia dos seculos XX e XII.
